This book.
This book has been read by a lot of people... but it needs to be read by MORE people. It needs to find its way into the hands of folks who are voting for school board members because of political parties instead of voting for school board members based on what each individual candidate is hoping to do for kids.

I viewed the primary results for districts in my area. I can only imagine that those results are similar to other school board results all across the country. There are good people — Democrats AND Republicans — who are running for unpaid positions that will monopolize their time and cause premature greying of hair. They will lose weight, or maybe gain weight. They will chew aspirins like TicTacs and start to crack a beer on Tuesday nights when they used to only drink on the weekends. And yet, those candidates are doing what they’re doing because they care about kids.
They want to do what's best for kids.
And guess what? Sometimes doing what's best for kids doesn't fall neatly into a political party. Sometimes doing what's best for kids requires one to KNOW the individual kids. To realize what a six-year-old or a sixteen-year-old is experiencing in 2025. To quote Bob Dylan, “The times, they are a-changin’.” To quote Atticus Finch, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” And to quote Hannah Rae, “Without raisins, bread pudding lacks its unique flavor… just like a school district will lack its unique student body if we try to eliminate individuality by fitting everyone into a box. Sometimes, all of the ingredients are necessary—even when you think you don’t like one of them.”
This book, An Illusion of Control, provides mirrors and windows. People will see themselves in some of the characters, for sure… but they’ll also experience perspectives very different from theirs. I guarantee it.
My mom listened to the audio version of An Illusion of Control earlier today and called me when she finished. “How do we get this book into the hands of the people who need to read it?” she asked. “I just wish someone like Jenna Bush Hager would find out about it.”
Same, Mom. Same.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a connection to Jenna. Or Reese. Or Oprah. Or any of the other celebrities with massive followings on social media. What I do have is a small family of fans who have supported me from the get-go, so what I’m asking of you is this:
Encourage your friends to read or listen to the book.
Ask your local libraries to add An Illusion of Control to their shelves.
Write a review on Amazon, Goodreads, Audible, BookBub, or any other place that’s popular among readers.
Just… get the word out. Because how fucking angry are we all gonna be if An Illusion of Control takes off AFTER the November election? By then, it’ll be too late. Let’s do something now.
